Fireplace Update: Affordable DIY Project

Welcome to our fireplace update: affordable DIY project!

We have been wanting to update our fireplace for some time now. The reason we hadn’t was due to Marc and I having absolutely no experience in laying tile and hearing that it was a pretty labor intensive job requiring skills we do not have! I was scrolling through Instagram stories one afternoon and saw Lauren Stewart had updated her kids bathroom with adhesive tiles. Next thing you know I was ordering “marble” adhesive tiles to “glow up,” my fireplace! The specific tiles I used were from Wayfair and linked here. This turned out to be a very affordable DIY project!

The tiles come ready to lay and there was minimal prep work. I just cleaned and dried my existing tile. To begin laying the adhesive tile, you simply cut the left side to make a straight edge and get started. You match your next sheet of tile to the piece you just laid in the same way you would match ceramic or marble tiles.

The process was very simple when laying entire pieces that had NO cuts! It was still relatively simple laying pieces that did require small straight cuts. However, it was a bit more difficult to lay pieces that required quite a few cuts like the piece that met with the bottom of the wood mantel. Luckily for us, we only had two pieces that required intricate cuts. A straight edge carpet cutting blade cuts the adhesive tile extremely well, I just struggled to get straight cuts with the straight edge and preferred to use a good pair of sharp scissors.

Overall – I’m beyond thrilled with the results and am wondering why I didn’t do this years ago! It’s brightens up the space so much!

I have included some pictures of the process below.

Thanks for reading! What DIY projects have you completed? Any plans to do anything? Let me know!
